What is a placement test?
The In Focus Vocabulary Placement Test is used to measure the student’s general vocabulary knowledge and size, and to identify the words the student should be studying. The test consists of about 60 questions. They are all multiple choice questions. After the student has taken the test, the system will decide how many words the student is likely to know from the NGSL and NAWL word lists and recommend a list of words for the student's personal study.
What is NGSL?
NGSL stands for New General Service List (NGSL). It is a list of approximately 2,800 words which are especially useful for students who want to read general texts in English. Together with the 1,000 NAWL words, these 3,800 words allow learners to understand almost 95% of most English texts; these are nearly all the words learners will ever need (not bad if you consider there are more than 600,000 words in English!).
